About Coach Marcelo

Marcelo Gomide Oliveira was born on 21 August 1992 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where sport was a central part of his upbringing. From a young age, he immersed himself in futsal and judo, excelling in the latter until his teenage years when his interest in martial arts faded. That changed at 18, when a growing curiosity for mixed martial arts led him to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Under the guidance of renowned black belt Erik Wanderley, Marcelo rediscovered his passion for competition and dedicated himself fully to the sport. As a purple belt, he committed all his spare time to training, later cross-training at Gracie Barra’s headquarters in Belo Horizonte with respected coaches Claudio Caloquinha and Sergio Benini.

In June 2019, after two years competing at brown belt, Marcelo was awarded his black belt by Coach Wanderley at Gracie Barra Mangabeiras, where they both taught. After relocating to another neighbourhood, the two co-founded Gracie Barra Cobre, where Marcelo continued to coach until his move to Australia. Upon arriving in Sydney, Marcelo joined forces with his partners to establish Trinity Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — a team built on his deep experience, competitive drive, and commitment to high-level instruction.
